Looking forward to our #Gatherings film screening at the wonderful @silkmillinfrome on Wed 24th August, bringing together refugee families, hosts/organisers and local families based in #somerset.
and tie dyeing always makes for a fun session ๐ŸŒˆ๐ŸŒผ
Itโ€™s been a real pleasure working with women & families from @aidboxcommunity over the past few weeks, using natural materials & the beautiful community garden @bristoltrinity as inspiration for drawings, clay work & tie dyeing. The members were so up for experimenting with new ideas & materials, and one 9yr old boy wowed us all with his creative talent.
Being together and losing ourselves in fun, laughter, creativity & nature ๐ŸŒฟ all the essential ingredients. Some brilliant memories with wonderful people; elders, artists & volunteers #meetmeatthealbany #Lewishamhomes.
Journeys & migration are part of all our stories, yet so much conflict is about borders. This is a still from animations made by child refugees in Calais with the wonderful @artrefuge_ and screened at my first ever event. In another people shared the reasons behind journeys taken by relatives. These #kindnesspostcards show warmth & empathy for people fleeing Ukraine, while the govt sending vulnerable refugees to Rwanda sends the opposite message ๐Ÿ˜ข

Making sessions with members from #AFRILโ€™s Helping Hands Foodbank (pre covid). I find clay & textiles are brilliant when working with people from refugee backgrounds because of their universality and multi sensory natures. They provide exploratory and therapeutic mediums for people to express themselves, their experiences, craft & cultural practices. Our Sri Lankan friend made this wonderful elephant within a 20m session!

In every project & group Iโ€™ve worked with we use nature & place as guide, material & inspiration, exploring and immersing ourselves in the landscape and engaging in mindful practices, creative play & experimentation ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒฑ
Heading off to hear music in the sun tonight & thinking back to the first gig at the caravan.. wonderful musicians with a lovely supportive crowd playing by candlelight @thfest 2017. A magical night ๐Ÿ’ซ
Collaboration is at the heart of my project. Joining up with brilliant organisations like @brockley_open_studios at festivals & events helped bring visibility and public engagement to us both, as well as mutual support for our small non-profit, artist & women led community initiatives. One sunny festival we invited people to share stories of journeys & migration in their families to celebrate #worldrefugeeday- many great conversations were had and so many journeys added!
Happy Sunday lovely folk โ˜€๏ธโ˜€๏ธ
